The best I've seen, yet
The problem with Santorum's way of thinking is that this reduces women, legally, to prisoners of their biology, and little more than breeding chattel. It is illegal for a man to force himself on her, but, if the rapist chooses to break the law, the victim has no choice but to lend her body, perhaps even endangering her life, to producing the rapist's offspring. So, while the act of rape is illegal, legally (if Santorum had his way) the woman must be the unwilling incubator for her rapist's offspring -- whatever it does to her mental or physical well-being. Which means that any woman of child bearing age could, presumably, be forced by any man to breed his child -- his actions (if he was apprehended) would get him in trouble, but she would still have no choice but to bear his kid.
Oh, and did I mention, she should be grateful for it too? After all, this is a "gift"!

KARMA!
So this bitch-ass punk of a kid has been spearheading a smartass rebellion in one of my classes. Too bad, because aside from having no common sense, he's very intelligent.

Last week I had an episode with him in which my principal was not supportive. Granted, I'm sure I put my toe out of line, as well, but this kid was being a bitch-ass punk, shrieking his head off and throwing a tantrum IN CLASS.

Yesterday I look at this jerk after all his cronies have cleared out, and I say, "What's up? Do you dislike me? Is that why you're doing this?"

"No," he says, grinning like a Cheshire Cat, like there's a joke or someone farting in the distance. "I don't hate you, I think you're a great teacher."

"If that's true, then why do this? Why throw these fits, why get everyone to do this to me?"

"I dunno. I guess I think it's funny. And when I get mad, I just go crazy. Ask anyone."

"Well, you better learn to stop. One day you're gonna go off to the wrong person and it's gonna get you a broken nose."

"Maybe, but you wait and see what I do to him!"

At this point, the kid is clearly beyond help. I work out a management system with him, I arrange for his punishment, I say goodbye.

9:50 AM, following day: He walks in to my class for his morning recess detention, giving his fellow inmates high-fives and acting like the king.

Who should come in the door as well but the principal, coming to speak to me about his observation of my class today.

He graciously allows me to announce to the assembled students that some of them are here for the fourth time, and therefore have a detention. My bitch-ass punk is at the top of the list.

"WHAT? HOW??? THAT'S NOT FOUR TIMES! THAT ONE DIDN'T EVEN COUNT! THAT'S MESSED UP!"

Principal pounce! "Is that any way to speak to your teacher?!"

"NO, BUT -"

"Right. It's not. So stop talking."

"BUT THAT'S MESSED UP!" He gets up and starts to leave.

"Sit back down," says the principal.

"NO, SHE SAID I HAD A DETENTION, SO I'M LEAVING." Exunt.

Principal looks at me. "I'll take care of him."

Suspension. No more of him until January.

How's that broken nose workin' for ya?

HOLY SHIT!!!
The appearance of new people keeps reminding me what a poor school I teach in. These poor schmoes came here expecting normalcy, functionality. They expected to have systems in place that were straightforward and clear. They expected failsafes and safety nets. They expected to have keys to doors and working copiers. He'll, I bet they even expected to have funding.

Yeah, I remember being that niave, too.

The only difference is that I have tried to adapt. Things work differently here. Granted, they don't work well, just differently. One of them is trying. She's thrown herself into the muck and is doing her best to Wade through it. The other two, however, are still clinging to their old ways. Their better ways.

I miss those days.

Unfortunately, they're admittedly pretty arrogant. Mr. Young Bodybuilder has been in the biz for 19 years, so of course he's the shit. It's amazing more of us haven't gone to him for advice, although he has condescended to pass it on to us as often as he can. The SE teacher talks pretty legal jargon and speaks with passion in her voice. I sympathize with her. She expects collaboration and communication and support, and it's true, this is not the place to find it. Here apparently it's sink or swim. I remember being thrown two books and told to doggy paddle, myself. 'Good luck inventing that curriculum, don't forget to follow the rules we never told you, and always stick to the systems and policies we never explained.'. Particularly for a special Ed teacher, that shit's gotta be hard. But when you're about as professional as a four-year-old Hello Kitty fanatic, and when you don't arrive on time or stay until you're supposed to, at some point, something's wrong on your end. Using other teachers' time isn't the way to do it, either. And no, I have no idea what stacks of papers you're talking about. I still don't know which of my kids need special modifications.

Now, add this to a staff who THRIVES on being argumentative, stubborn, accusatory, loud, interrupting, and - my favorite - hypocritical, and of COURSE we're going to have problems. But shit, guys. They've been here like a week and already you've had a shouting match with them! Don't we have another eight months to go? Won't it be even harder to work with enemies instead of colleagues?

Does this staff focus only on the negative? He'll yes. Do we scream for change and then fail to make those changes within ourselves? Holla. Are we a bunch of bitchy primadonnas? Survey says 'abso-fuckin-loutely.' But come on, can't we all just get along?

Because I haven't vented enough
I just got back to Rio Vista after three days of being gone, only to find that my landlord had come on to the property to dig up my garden. We were just starting to get tomatoes. Our squash were getting big. We had edamame and chard. Now it's all in a trash can. And the best part, he took stuff. Like our sunflower heads. Possibly even one of the ripe squash. I still have 8 more days on my lease. I am paid THROUGH THE END OF THIS MONTH. He had no right to do that. I want to be ill. I'm furious.

This isn't even the first time he's pulled shit like this. He's randomly showed up to do yard work I was "neglecting," or I've come home to find him in the middle of it, saying he's going to charge me for it. This is illegal. This is harassment. This is despicable. He REFUSES to give me an initial walk through, which I requested and which is my RIGHT, yet he'll trespass onto the property to destroy my plants.

This is the biggest bullshit I've ever heard of. And I don't expect it's the end, either.

I'd like to point out that 'how so' precludes a negative response...

Aw man
So I was trying to get to my school's site to update my students' homework when I accidentally got the one for my old school - the one I liked, the one I wanted. It was so good to see it again, if only as a picture. It made me smile. Then my smile became a frown once more as I actually did get to my current school's website. I may have grimaced at what a horrible place and how poorly managed it is. Ugh.

It's not just me, right?
When a student deliberately chokes another one out at recess so that he passes out, that should merit expulsion, right? They should at least not get to walk at graduation!

When a student makes repeated derogatory comments in class despite multiple warnings from multiple teachers, as well as detentions and conferences, that's not a simple matter of 'classroom management' anymore, right? The principal could at least have a word with them!

When a student skips out on a teacher detention, and the next step is a principal detention - then shouldn't that principal detention happen?

Aiya.

Hunh
Parent: The one thing that you have that no other teacher has is your curriculum is solid. You know what you're doing and you're teaching them something. Mainly the problem with these kids is they've never had a real English class before.

Hunh. Cool. Fooled one of them, at least!
